It is almost impossible to get the perfect chocolate frosting. Often times we would try different recipes and they would be too stiff, or way too runny. I am a fan of an easy spread frosting. I just don’t like “super dry” frosting, but also I want the frosting to stay on the cake. So finding the perfect middle ground is where we aimed for.
Trial and error finally paid off and we hit the nail right on the head. This frosting is absolutely delicious. We made “chocolate” then mixed it into the base ingredients of our original white frosting.
The trick is to move it around with the spatula and add wet or dry ingredients until you hit the proper consistency. So if its too wet, just add more powdered sugar, milk if too dry.
Vegetable Shortening Alternatives:
You can substitute the exact same amount of butter for vegetable shortening.
Shortening + Butter:
You can also do half and half butter and vegetable shortening in your Chocolate Frosting. I prefer using one or the other, but general frostings use a mix of the two.
Powdered Sugar Alternatives:
Making powdered sugar from other sugars:
Simply add 1 cup of your favorite granulated sugar and 1 tablespoon of cornstarch or arrowroot powder to a food processor and mix until a powder has formed!
